Dear followers!
After an eventful end of 2008 and an hectic start of 2009, I am happy to say that things are now settling.
I opened a new boutique called "Silverwood" (of course) on the 3d floor of Afflecks Palace, along with Victoria (Victoria's vintage remade) and Helen (Tailor Bird Vintage).
We designed this new space with Thomas Mills and are absolutely delighted with it as we really went for it, one more time, creating a very special atmosphere and using recycled wood as for The Silverwood Shop.
As you might know, Tom built the first shop that was situated on the 2nd floor of the Malsboro House on Newton Street, within the quirky Marbella Café and next to the "cutting edge" street art gallery Upper Space.
This blog will now exist only for the souvenir of the beginning of my retail adventures ;)

In the air
Hello, this thursday, I got the chance to be interviewed by Danielle on All FM. We spoke about people's relation to vintage clothing, english and french style, relocating in Afflecks etc.
I didn't think anyone would be listening but apparently yes. So, as I should get a copy, I will share it with you, (if my voice doesn't completely freaks me out ;))

BREAKING NEWS

Due to a dispute between Sunshine Studios (who sublets to UPPER SPACE) and the owner of the Marlsboro House, access to the building is currently denied.
It does sound and look quite bad but as we had been speaking about relocating, all have the energy to make it bigger and better and have an awesome place in mind, you shouldn't be worried.
Stay connected, decisions will be taken very shortly!!!

Interview by PULP Magazine, December 2008

In the heart of Marlsboro House lies a little gem. But you’d never know looking at it. The building looks like a run down office block, but make your way up through the graffitied stairwell and you’ll find SilverWood nestled in between street art gallery Upper Space and the whimsical Marbella Café.
Opened this September by MMU graduate Anne-Laure and fashion designer Henrietta, SilverWood acts as an exhibition space as well a vintage boutique. The clothes are hand picked by Anne-Laure in Paris and there is a brilliant collection of unusual items at reasonable prices (about £20 for a dress). The whole shop was put together in collaberation with other artists. Tom Mills, an MMU student came up with the design concept whilst Liverpudlian artist Elizabeth Willow designed the ethereal changing room.
Every Saturday there are workshops and stalls selling arts and crafts with Henrietta also available to alter and customise clothes. There are already plans for a fashion show at the beginning of 2009 featuring new and vintage clothes from Paris. Anne-Laure and Henrietta are eager to get other students involved either with designing the shop (they hope to redesign it every few months), selling arts and crafts or with setting up workshops. I would highly recommend a visit to the second floor of Marlsboro House because not only is it an intriguing building to look around but with SilverWood, Upper Space and Marbella Café all on one floor, it is an unexpected but lovely place to explore.
To get there, walk to The Roadhouse on Newton Street in the Northern Quarter, carry on walking up that road and you will see the building in front of you. ‘Marlsboro House’ is emblazoned on the side so you can’t miss it.
HM: Whose style do you admire? Your style icons?
A-LF: Oh I like many many styles… From Françoise Hardy to Leigh Bovery! Style with attitude I guess.
HM: Do you prefer vintage clothes to new? and why?
A-LF: My mum was a bit of a fashion victim and she kept some of her best pieces from the late 60’s - early 70’s. I started wearing them because they had such an original edge and were also far better quality than anything I could find on the High Street. I really dislike the idea of the unnecessary mountains of poor quality clothes produced and I don’t mind being on the other side of the production’s chain and give a second life to clothes.
HM: Have you got any advice for buying vintage/second hand clothes? Any particular brands we should look out for?
A-LF: I guess that the main problem with second-hand clothes is to find something that fits. Be reasonable or get it altered I would say. I love it when I find some Cacharel but I get as excited by Ladies Pride or Pigalle.
HM: You source most of The Silverwood Shop clothes in Paris. Why is that? Is there better choice there? Are they more stylish?
A-LF: I studied and lived in Paris so I have my addresses and I know what I am looking for. The vintage scene there is a bit different and so are the products. The cut can be better and the clothes without being necessarily more stylish are a bit different so more original. There are lots of lovely shops in which to venture in Le Marais and it is always worth having a look in Colette, the concept store that started them all.
At the moment there is quite a lot of english vintage clothing and antiques in the shop but my associate Henrietta (who provides an in house alteration service every saturday) and I are working on a catwalk show of French vintage for the beginning of 2009.
HM: After you graduated from MMU, how did you decide to open a shop? Were you and Henrietta wanting to do this for a while? I think it is every students dream to open a craft/clothes shop!
A-LF: After graduating from MMU, I started working as a free lance photographer and assistant but also as a vintage fashion buyer. It sort of happened naturally as I always used to act as a personal shopper for my friends back in France and already had at the back of my mind quite a precise idea of what my perfect shop would look like.
Henrietta and I shared the same excitement and had quite a few passionate discussions about the whole idea before the opportunity to give it life showed up. The whole adventure is both very exciting and a bit scary as I don’t have a formal business or communication background but as a small structure, it stays quite manageable.
HM: I love the look of The Silverwood Shop. What was your inspiration behind the interior design? It reminds me of Dover Street Market in London, with Upper Space and Marbella Cafe right next door. It has an artists community feel.
A-LF: Thanks a lot! Henrietta is more into minimalism, I am very good at filling spaces and we were lucky enough to know Tom Mills, a talented 3D design student who helped us to design the shop. He built it entirely from recycled materials (mainly wood palettes). We also got all the furniture second hand.
As I also curate exhibitions (link) with my partner in crime Jan Evans, I was very keen on featuring some of the artists we work with (Such as Elly Stringer, Elizabeth Willow, Ellie Evans, Tom Mills of course).
It most definitely has an artist community feel and I am very willing to get more people involved in showing/selling their work in the shop, at our alternative christmas market and any further events we are working on.
HM: Is this the reason you chose this location for The Silverwood Shop?
A-LF: Very much so! This floor has a special edge and we can do so much with this space that it is all very exciting as it is right in the northern quarter. Its precise location on the second floor of a grey building makes it a bit difficult to find but gives it its underground feel.

Highlight: "Victoria's Vintage & Remade"

A-LF: Where does your passion for vintage clothing come from?
VS: i went to charity shops from an early age with my dad. he hated spending a lot of money on clothes and would always shun brands.
A-LF: what makes it so addictive?
VS: i get such a thrill when i find a bargain. i love the clothes because they are original and often so beautifully made. i hate to see someone wearing the same thing as me, although i bumped into 3 girls wearing the same vintage sequin butterfly top at the secret garden party this year. it as a good conversation starter though.
A-LF: when did you start customising clothes?
VS: i added felt flowers to my (second-hand) Lee flared jeans as well as customising my Doc Marten's when I was at college. I hadn't done anything since, until recently i decided to start "Victoria's Vintage Remade". The clothes i customise aren't necessarily vintage, but they are all second-hand. i give them a new lease of life by adding something simple such as new buttons or a sequin motif. i got such a thrill when i sold my first piece.
A-LF: what are your plans for 2009 fashion?
VS: Lace. It's an easy way to update a garment, whether it's a simple trim or a fancy collar. I also want to use vintage scarves; the patterns are so beautiful.

First review: Manchester Confidential
The SilverWood shop
Natalie Bradbury finds trinkets galore at SilverWood Shop

Where is it?
2nd Floor
Marlboro House
52-54 Newton Street
M1 1ED
Open 12-7pm Wednesday to Saturday
The History
The SilverWood Shop was opened at the end of September by Manchester Metropolitan University photography graduate Anne-Laure Franchette and dress maker/musician Henrietta Smith-Rolla.
The launch included a vintage and craft market and acoustic acts.
The shop was designed and built by Tom Mills, a design student at MMU, including the unusual light fixtures. The walls incorporate old cassette players.
Franchette was previously a fashion and music photographer, and curated art shows as SilverWood Exhibitions.
Smith-Rolla is a free lance dress maker and one of the member of the Sisters Of Transistors.

Why go there?
Silver Wood Shop shares the second floor of Marlboro House, an old warehouse, with Upper Space gallery.
It is also surrounded by the comfortable sofas of Marbella Café, which opened at the end of August.
Franchette, who describes herself as being “passionate about fanzines”, provides fanzines and books to browse as you drink tea and eat cake. The shop has an impressive range of old annuals to choose from, from past copies of the Dandy to retro A-Team and Karate Kid annuals. There are also children's books, including old editions of Enid Blyton favourites.
The fanzine cabinet also provides information on the Liverpool Biennial and other art exhibitions, and displays quirky miniature artwork.
Even the changing cubicle is delightfully decorated, with hanging sculptures made of twigs and small bottles by Liverpool artist Elizabeth Willow.

Vintage clothes are surrounded by fashion artefacts such as perfume bottles and flamenco dolls.
As Franchette says, “there's a mini Afflecks Palace vibe”.
They describe the shop as “a changing space”, where people will be “surprised”.
The SilverWood Shop's own dressmaker, Henrietta Smith-Rolla, does any alterations required.
Who shops there?
Anyone looking for genuine French fashion – Franchette is from Paris, and brings half of the shop's clothes from there and Smith-Rolla proposes a unique in house alterations and exclusive same day customising service.
Franchette and Smith-Rolla created a 'Wish List' for anyone looking for a special item – Franchette will see if she can source it when visiting different places across France and the UK.
Franchette knows her fashion – she was previously a vintage buyer for Rags to Bitches.

What does it sell?
Franchette buys things she would personally wear or could imagine someone she knows wearing.
Silver Wood Shop showcases the work of talented young designers and local craftspeople. It is open to suggestions from anyone who wants to sell their goods in the shop.
Franchette and Smith-Rolla also displays the work of local artists. Students of Manchester Metropolitan University, past and present, offer unique gifts, including Elly Stigner's quirky cards and embroidery student Ellie Evans' fabric badges.
The shop also sells more familiar items, such as David Shrigley's postcards. Ellie's mum made the shop's hats, and Franchette herself makes jewellery. Vintage clothes include both everyday and evening dresses, plus jumpers ranging from the practical to the glitzy. Wrap up further with fur coats, leather jackets and velvet blazers.
Accessories include purses, leather bags and luggage, jewellery by Amy Payne and second-hand shoes. A friend of Franchette, Bryony Richardson has produced adorable baby clothes like mini knitted jumpers and furry shoes. Franchette also sells eco-friendly goods, for example vases recycled from plastic bottles and objects made from recycled metal. Franchette has also decided to specialise in “cheesy vinyls”.

Future
Franchette and Smith-Rolla intend the shop to be an exhibition space, and will invite a different artist or designer to redesign the space every two months. Franchette also hopes to be able to provide international zines, and eventually produce her own magazine, Silver Wood Magazine, which will provide information for expatriates and articles about travel. Franchette will also introduce more products, such as mirrors, in addition to stocking men's clothes. They planning to host events like film, folk and poetry nights, as well as installing a runway and holding a catwalk show. Franchette also hopes that more 3D design students will become involved.
